If possible, try to avoid Americans.

Do some vineyards. Don't let the levee break.

Don’t bother with 2 nights in LA, in fact if you have a late flight just see it on the way to the airport. Try cutting inland to see Yosemite and stay a night near there (might be a long drive tho) or stay in Santa Barbara one night.

Like Mike said.Head up to Napa. One hour drive from SF.Preferably get on a wine country tour so you can get rat arsed while you're up there.

Exchange your 2 nights in LA for 2 nights in San Diego. You'll thank me for it...

Don't know if you need 2 nights in Monterey to be honest. Spend one of those nights in Santa Cruz instead!

Will be trip number 4 to CAL this coming October... we normally do shed loads of driving but this time spending loads of it in and around LA (Huntingdon Beach/Anaheim/Burbank) and then finish off a few days in Palm Springs and San Diego... in which we will be spending 3 nights in a dog hotel !!
I love LA.... it's a fucking enormous place... the beaches are the nuts... Hollywood is Hollywood and on a short trip like yourself I'd knock it on the head.... whale watching in Monterey is out of this world... we must of seen 25-30 last time... breaching Humpbacks, Blues and Finn's... even a couple of Orcas... blew me away.... however the 2 best places been to in Cal was Yosemite NP and the Big Sur (on the PCH1) both just mind blowing.... whatever you do you'll love it there

NS, Going to Yosemite next year. Did you stay in the park, lodges seem expensive or did you stay near by?

DAveT I stayed in the tents in curry village right in the park. Perfect for that feeling of being in nature. They are permanent tents with wooden floors, beds etc and a bear locker so you don’t get eaten. It wasn’t that expensive

Twice we done it once we stayed in Oakhurst (about 40 mins outside parks entrance) and a couple of years ago we stayed in static tents in Housekeeping Camp situated on the merced riverr... loved it... had raccoons squirrels and all sorts walking through our tent.... think it was about £75-00 a night... it does get booked up quickly though ,,, would stay there everytime now

New Parish, Oakland, and/or Bricks and Mortar, SF, for live bands/jazz - decent night out depending.
Also, watch the film Fruitvale Station for how to get around on the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).
